Yesterday, I began a course studying the poetry and songs of 18th-century bard Robert Burns. That course is being offered through the University of Glasgow.

Not long ago, I wrote that because of my having registered for this course, I discovered into the music of the Scotish Folk Singer Eddi Reader. Every time I listen to her sing My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, I am in awe. No doubt, Burns wrote some of the most brilliant pieces in the history of the English language, and it is amazing how many people continue to celebrate him in song–almost 300 years after he wrote the lyrics.
