In the first example, the sky layer was Blended in the Pin Light Mode. It is interesting to note that the sky is lightened everywhere in this mode–not merely where the layers overlap. To illustrate that point, I am posting an image of the sky alone–completely separate from any blending action. The examples follow the image of the sky.
